The check does not compare the books with a bank or any other system, and it cannot see an entry that was never recorded.
What it checks
Every night the system reads the whole journal, rebuilds the ledger from it and runs three checks:
- every entry balances, its debits equal to its credits;
- the trial balance ties, total debits equal to total credits;
- and the balance sheet foots, assets equal to liabilities plus equity plus net income.
What it keeps
One row is written for the night: the date, the result, the count of entries checked and the count of discrepancies, the first twenty kept in the row. A red night stays on the record.
Your numbers would be checked every night too.
