What was checked

Every night the system reads the whole journal, rebuilds the ledger from it and runs three checks: every entry balances, its debits equal to its credits; the trial balance ties, total debits equal to total credits; and the balance sheet foots, assets equal to liabilities plus equity plus net income. One row is written for the night: the date, the result, the count of entries checked and the count of discrepancies, the first twenty kept in the row. A red night stays on the record. The check does not compare the books with a bank or any other system, and it cannot see an entry that was never recorded.
